ONE Cell Shade (17x17)
One Cell Shade
Base Unit of Measurement
The One Cell Shade is the foundational building block of the Flying Shade system. Every larger structure is composed by combining, extending, or modifying this core unit.
A cell is a square bamboo frame with a tensioned fabric canopy, designed to be structurally sound on its own while seamlessly integrating into multi-cell configurations. This modular approach allows clients to think in clear, repeatable units when planning shade coverage.
Cell dimensions
Shade canopy: 17 ft × 17 ft
This dimension defines the usable shaded area of a single cell
Footprint
Overall footprint: 33 ft × 33 ft
Includes bamboo kickers that extend 8 ft outward around the perimeter, increasing width and length by 16 ft
What a cell represents
The base unit of measurement for all Flying Shade structures
A repeatable module used to scale shade environments up or down
The reference point for planning layouts, coverage, and site fit
System notes
Cells can stand alone or connect on any side
Half-cell triangles are created by folding a cell in half
Cells can support embellishments such as walls, backdrops, drop ceilings, and layered canopies
Proven bamboo and tensioned fabric system used across festivals, parks, and special events
When a structure is described as 9 cells, 10 cells, or 14 cells, it refers directly to how many of these 17 ft × 17 ft units are combined to form the canopy. This keeps ordering, planning, and scaling intuitive while allowing for expressive, sculptural variation.
